Have Some Perspective
Individual Gallery Show
December 5-13, 2022, Blanchard Art Gallery, South Hadley, MA

Stemming from the wordplay of the concept ‘perspective,’ Have Some Perspective is an exhibition dedicated to spreading radical empathy. From the manipulation of patterns and diversity of media, the artist invites you to conjure your own interpretations of the artworks. Our perceptions are shaped by our own feelings and experiences. By acknowledging one’s own perspective and conversing with others about their points of view, we can better understand and appreciate the differences between us. As we confer about art and see the disparities between us, we can acknowledge the array of human experiences that shape our outlook on the world. I hope that we can appreciate the incredible nature of human individuality while slightly widening our perspectives by sharing our thoughts and feelings.
With initial inspiration from artist Bridget Riley’s Movement in Squares (1969) and my long spanning history with attending live music events, the artist aims to capture the essence of movement. My fascination with checkerboard patterns stems from their love of Ska music. This is a genre of music that is a hybrid blend of jazz, reggae, and rock music with origins from Indigenous Jamaica in the late 1800s. Ska has always been a voice against the oppressor. The checkerboard pattern became a signature for the second generation of Ska music as it stood as a statement against racial segregation by balancing equal representation of black and white squares. This is what the checkerboard motif means to me, but I am also interested in the viewer’s perspective and associations with the pattern. Patterns can spark different memories and reactions uniquely for each individual. In all, checkerboards are a perfect union of colors that connect so precisely, yet can be warped in a way to manipulate our visual perspective and to communicate movement.
