Something's Missing

“Something’s Missing” 2021
16x13x5in, tufted punch needle, yarn, wire, chain, canvas on wood

Playing with the idea of perspective, this 3-dimensional mixed media sculpture is meant to be experienced from all angles. Checkered tufted elements draw your eye to a skull that has ‘something missing’. A small, tufted circle and whirling wire pieces crown the ‘brain’ of the skull, giving a sense of confusion and disarray. Alternating colored pieces of yarn travel from the outside of the ‘box’, drawing your eye into the center. Asymmetrical tufted elements disrupt the box like structure, jetting out and climbing up the sides to give an added sense of disillusionment. The hand drawn warped checkerboard background on curving canvas contrasts the straight edges of the tufted checkerboard and gives variety to that pattern, having the viewer see it from a different perspective.

This piece is a commentary on life post-pandemic. An element of my life that was commonplace before now exists in a different world that I don’t feel comfortable accessing any time soon. With all the madness and confusion, it is hard to keep one’s identity present and relevant in this new world that we are all adjusting to. “Something’s Missing” comments on that experience by giving the viewer a distraction from those everyday anxieties by experiencing something entirely new. This piece is meant to unite us through our navigating of newfound anxieties by revealing that commonality within us all.
